چکیده

Basic chromium sulphate is the most versatile and common tanning agent in the leather industry. Under certain circumstances, the oxidation of the trivalent chromium salts into the hexavalent compounds, which are used in leather manufacture, is a crucial issue. In this study, different proportions of basic chromium sulphate were used in tanning and re-tanning processes according to a commonly used recipe, and levels of chromium oxide and hexavalent chromium were studied stratigraphically in the crosssection of the leather. It was observed that the levels of chromium oxide and hexavalent chromium in the skins increased in relation to the proportions of basic chromium sulphate used in the process, and that the amounts added in the tanning process had a greater effect on the levels of hexavalent chromium formed in the layers of the skins than did the amounts added in re-tanning.

Potential Danger of Chromium Tanned Wastes

This contribution deals with the waste from the processes in which raw hide is transformed into leather, as well as with the waste generated during further leather processing and the final waste of leather industry, the worn-out shoes. All this waste, if deposited in the open-air dumps, represents a potential threat to human health, because it contains trivalent chromium (Cr III), which can oxi...

Chromium released from leather – I: exposure conditions that govern the release of chromium(III) and chromium(VI)

BACKGROUND Approximately 1-3% of the adult population in Europe is allergic to chromium (Cr). A new restriction in REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) based on the ISO 17075 standard has recently been adopted in the EU to limit Cr(VI) in consumer and occupational leather products. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to critically assess key experiment...

Chromium(III) and chromium(VI) release from leather during 8 months of simulated use

BACKGROUND Chromium (Cr) release from Cr-tanned leather articles is a major cause of Cr contact dermatitis. It has been suggested that Cr(VI) release from leather is not necessarily an intrinsic property of the leather, but is strongly dependent on environmental conditions. OBJECTIVES To test this hypothesis for long-term (8 months) simulated use. MATERIALS AND METHODS The release of total ...

Chrome free organic tannages and molecular level understanding of the tanning process for the production of leather with high hydrothermal stability

It is rather strange that today I am talking about chrome-free tannages when I have devoted my whole life to improving the chrome-tanning system. When I was a student, I wondered why chrome tanned leather that stood the boil, did so only for about 1 to 2 minutes. My ambition was to find out how leather could be treated like textile, and we discovered and patented a product and process for impro...
